A valuable piece of advice for rising Nottingham Forest star Arvin Appiah

Published on: 10 May 2018

It’s great to see Nottingham Forest youngster Arvin Appiah representing England at the Under-17s European Championships.

And he scored a fabulous goal against Italy on Monday.

It sounds like he’s someone Forest have high hopes for, so who knows, maybe he’ll get his chance with the seniors next year.

You only have to look at the impact Ryan Sessegnon has had at Fulham to see that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. He’s been given regular game time and has thrived – and he’s 17, the same age as Appiah.

Everyone matures at different ages, though, so not everyone is ready to be a first-team regular at the same time.

Consistency is the magic word, too. You need that at any age. The best players don’t get better, they get more consistent – that’s something young lads need to remember.

The best piece of advice I can give to someone like Appiah as he tries to make his breakthrough, though, is to listen and learn.

Listen to what your coaches, older players and ex-players are telling you. They all have something to give.

And he needs to keep working hard. That applies to everyone, really.

Work on your weaknesses. If you’re good with your right foot, stay behind after training to practise with your left; whatever it takes to keep improving.

I regret not doing that; not trying that bit harder at certain stages of my career to get better.
