Alderweireld proves his point

Published on: 16 July 2018

Belgium central defender Toby Alderweireld hopes he has proved that he is back to his best by helping his country finish in third place at World Cup 2018.

The 29-year-old played just 14 Premier League games for Tottenham Hotspur last season after missing large parts of the campaign due to hamstring problems, but showed up well for the Red Devils in Russia.

I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November.

And, having helped Belgium reach the semi-finals for only the second time in their history, Alderweireld believes he is fully back on track, although he is uncertain about whether he will still be a Spurs player heading into the new season.

He told Nieuwsblad: "I really do not know anything yet (what my future holds). In my head I just go to Tottenham.

"I was very focused on this tournament, I wanted to prove something again. Show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play - for whatever reason - that it was unjustified.

"I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November.

"I was happy that I could still play four or five matches at the World Cup. I immediately had a good feeling.

"Physically there was no problem, because it was my only major injury in my career. I spent only three or four months (out) in my entire career and I'm glad I could come back in this way."

Meanwhile, Tottenham can be backed at 4/5 to finish in the top four in the Premier League next season, with Arsenal available at 2/1 and Liverpool 1/4.
