Arsenal Consider Offering Olivier Giroud in Part Exchange for Napoli Star Gonzalo Higuain

Published on: 12 July 2016

Arsenal are reportedly looking at offering Olivier Giroud to Napoli in a possible part-exchange deal for Argentine goal machine Gonzalo Higuain, last season's top scorer in Serie A with 36 goals in just 35 appearances.

The Gunners have long been linked with Higuain in the past, prior to his incredible 2015/16 season, but that interest appears to have resurfaced.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal are keen to negotiate a lower price with Napoli - Higuain's current price tag potentially stands in excess of £65m - by including Giroud in any talks moving forward.

It is said that Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri might like to have the Frenchman having been a spectator at the Euro 2016 final between France and Portugal on Sunday. Giroud scored three goals in the tournament as a whole.

Di Marzio also says that Higuain has already had one firm proposal from China.

Hebei Fortune, where Ezequiel Lavezzi and Gervinho currently play their football, are rumoured to have offered Higuain a huge €50m annual salary to trade Europe for the rapidly expanding Chinese Super League.

However, in a boost to Napoli, Arsenal and any other interested parties, the player quickly rejected it, suggesting a decision on his future will be motivated by a footballing reasons rather than financial.

Giroud has divided Arsenal fans almost since day one. He arrived off the back of Montpellier's unexpected Ligue success in 2012 and has always produced double figures in front of goal in the Premier League.

Yet many supporters have been infuriated by his inconsistency and have long been demanding that Arsene Wenger to sign a proven top class striker to lead the line instead.
