ASreport thatSpanish striker Fernando Torres has agreed a one-year deal to remain at the club. The 32-year-old enjoyed an upturn in form after returning to the club, though this was not enough to see him named in Spain's Euro 2016 squad.

Manager Diego Simeone reportedly gave the forward a year-long contract - which can be extended if he meets performance-based targets - despite initialconversations revolving around atwo-year deal.

The manager has become one of the most sought-after in Europe after he single-handedly transformed the club's fortunes in recent years - reaching two Champions League finals.

AS also say that Simeone had to be convinced that he had not taken the club as far as he could, and there was real worry that he may decide to leave.

However, sporting director Andrea Berta went to visit him in Argentina to convince him to stay, before returning and finalising Torres' contract.
