Barcelona Sporting Director: Lionel Messi Will Sign New Contract This Season

Published on: 02 September 2016

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez says Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with the club this season.

The 29-year-old Barca legend currently has a deal that sees him through until 2018, but is set to extend that after the club tied Neymar down to a new five-year deal.

"This year there are a number of situations we need to solve," Fernandez told Sport. "As was the case with Rafinha, [Sergio] Busquets, Neymar and [Javier] Mascherano, people said we wouldn't reach an agreement, but in the end there were no problems.

"I'm delighted that he's the No 1 in the world and that he's with us. We will reach an agreement. I'm totally convinced.

"There's no rush. This season we will reach an agreement. Like we did with Rafinha, Mascherano, Busi and Neymar."

Fernandez also expressed delight at the club's transfer dealings this summer, after overseeing the recruitment of Paco Alcacer and Andre Gomes from Valencia and the capture of Samuel Umtiti from Lyon for £21.2m.

"I think we've done good deals," said Fernandez. "Umtiti in the current market would be worth a lot more.

"The Premier League ended up paying 40 million euros for Mustafi, for example," Fernandez said in reference to the amount of cash Arsenal splashed on the German centre-half.

Meanwhile, Messi insists he did not deceive anyone after announcing his international retirement after Argentina lost to Chile in the Copa America final.

I am very grateful [to return to the national team]," Messi told TV Publica.

"But I did not deceive anybody when I retired, I felt that. We were very disappointed with what had happened, but after that I thought better. I had a conversation with the [coach] Paton [Bauza] and the people as well accompanied me through it."
