Cairney hails Fulham depth

Fulham captain Tom Cairney believes that competition for places at the club will be key to their Premier league survival hopes.

The Cottagers came up through the Championship play-offs after Cairney scored the only goal in their 1-0 Wembley win over Aston Villa.

A busy summer ensued, with 12 new faces arriving at Craven Cottage, five of which came in on a busy deadline day.

If you want to stay in this league for a long time you need that competition for places.

Slavisa Jokanovic fielded seven of his permanent signings in the opening 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

Inevitably the knives have been out in the aftermath of that game and Fulham will be hoping that an extra week of their new players training with the old guard will help when they travel to Tottenham on Saturday

The Cottagers are 9/1 to win the game, with the draw 5/1 and Spurs available at 1/4.

Captain Cairney believes the influx of quality can only be a positive for the club, with the extra competition for places set to spur Jokanovic's squad on to push each other harder.

"I was sat watching it just like everyone else, like 'another one'. It was exciting. It's really good. Being a player you want to play with the best players and against good players as you can," Cairney told Sky Sports News.

"You've got to give a lot of credit to the owners. They've backed us, showed a lot of ambition and they're right behind us. It's down to us now to repay them."

"You think, 'wow, it's even harder to stay in the team,' but if you want to stay in this league for a long time you need that competition for places, you need quality."

Fulham are 1/4 to stay up, while they can be backed at 4/1 to finish in the top 10.
