Chelsea boss Conte drops hint to Roman: \'Money explains value\'

Published on: 11 May 2017

You hope Roman Abramovich was listening to Antonio Conte's press conference before Chelsea's clash with West Brom, because the Italian dropped the biggest hint yet that he wants to be paid for the work he has done this season.

The ex-Italy manager is on the cusp on having one of the greatest debut seasons for a manager.

After finishing 8th last season, Chelsea are three points away from winning the Premier League with three matches remaining. The Blues can clinch the title on Friday night when they travel to the Hawthorns to play West Brom. If Chelsea wins the title, it will mean Conte has won four successive club championships, the last three in the Serie A with Juventus.

Conte will also have the chance to secure the double if Chelsea can defeat Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 19.

Despite his immediate success at Stamford Bridge, it is believed Inter Milan have offered Conte a reported £12m-a-year deal and £127m transfer kitty to try and tempt the Italian to return to Italy, where his wife and daughter are currently living.

The 47-year old is currently on a deal worth £6.5m a season, which is less than Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger. The only manager amongst his rivals that is paid less than him is Spurs' Mauricio Pochettino.

Considering that Chelsea will more than likely win the title with a game or two to spare, Conte believes it is only fair he gets his fair share.

Speaking before the West Brom clash, Conte said: "The money is important only at this level to give the real value of a player or the coach.

"If you show you deserve it, you have earned the money. I think this.

"When you stay at this level, the money only explains to you your value. It tells you your value. Money is not the most important thing, but money is important to understand the real value of a person."
