Cup triumph thrills Kovac

Published on: 18 June 2018

Niko Kovac thought his Eintracht Frankfurt side thoroughly deserved their shock German Cup success against Bayern Munich.

Ante Rebic scored twice as Eintracht won 3-1 on Saturday against the Bundesliga champions.

To add some spice to proceedings, Kovac will replace Jupp Heynckes as Bayern coach this summer.

Croatian Rebic scored either side of Robert Lewandowski's equaliser for Bayern before the underdogs added a third goal through Mijat Gacinovic in stoppage time.

After guiding Frankfurt to their first cup win in 30 years, Kovac said: "I am happy for these amazing fans and for my team.

"When you stand together you can do everything. That is what marked this team for my two-and-a-half years here. Last year we missed out but this year we made it. We deserved it."

Meanwhile, a dejected Heynckes said "We did not use our chances. In sport there are wins as well as defeats.

"It was an avoidable defeat. But Frankfurt were ambitious, strong and with passion and they also had the necessary luck. They are deserved Cup winners."

Germany are 8/1 to win this summer's World Cup while Lewandowski is 33/1 to be the leading goalscorer at the tournament.
