Ex-Ghana Star Laryea Kingston reveals reasons for the high patronage of European football

Former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston has revealed why there is high patronage of European football compared to our own domestic league.

According to the former Hearts of Oak player the local league has been bedeviled by time wasting and unnecessary gimmicks which takes away the excitement of the game.

Laryea Kingston played in the local league twice, first in the early 2000’s when there was massive love for the local game before leaving for Europe.

He returned to wound up his career by playing just a season with Accra Hearts of Oak in 2012/13.

“If you take a look at the European football, the game is fast and it flows,” Laryea told Kumasi-based Abusua FM.

“Comparing to the Ghana League, players go down on the least contact which slows down the game. This makes fans enjoy watching foreign games at the expense of the local league.

“I can confidently say supporters who go to the stadium only enjoy less than 60 minutes of thrilling action – so the remaining 30 minutes are wasted,” he added.

The 36 year old who is now a coach and a football pundit insists referee should be pragmatic in dealing with scenes of time wasting.

“There are instances referees see minimal contacts on players. In such situation, he can instruct the medical team to quickly come for the player since their intention is to delay the game.”

“The referees should critically observe that certain contact is not severe. If such thing is checked, the supporters will enjoy the beauty of the game once again,” he advised.

Kingston played for several clubs in Europe including Locomotiv Moscow, Hearts of Mithlodian and Meccabi Tel Aviv.
