Ex-Ghanaian midfielder Ahmed Barusso defends Black Stars winning bonus

Former AS Roma player Ahmed Barusso says the Black Stars deserve their US$10,000 winning bonus. There has been intense debate about the amount paid senior internationals for winning a competitive match.

Two months ago, reports emerged that their bonus has been slashed but that is yet to be confirmed.

Barusso, who played a bit-part role in Ghana’s 2008 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on home soil, argues that there is no need to debate about the amount pocketed by Black Stars players.

“Those who say the players do not deserve the money they earn, I don’t agree with them. They should put themselves in the players’ shoes to know how it feels when they are done playing football. So, I believe the Black Stars deserve the $10,000 they want,” he said.

“Jerry Akaminko got injured and found it difficult to get a club, did anyone think about him? In Ghana, we don’t have a retiring package for our footballers unlike in Europe, and you can see many great players who played for Ghana are now living in difficult conditions.

“So, I think the players deserve every cedi they ask for.”
