FA CUP: Kotoko advance after penalty shootout win at Bekwai

Published on: 23 April 2017

Kotoko on Sunday advanced to the next stage of the MTN FA Cup after they beat Bekwai Youth Academy 3-1 on penalties at the Gyamfi Park. The game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Kwame Boateng powered the Porcupines into the lead a minute after the interval but the Division One side cancelled the deficit very late into the game when Jawu Thomas headed home a corner kick in the 94th minute.

The game had to be decided by penalties. The Porcupines were at their shooting best as they scored all three kicks while Bekwai Youth Academy missed three of their four kicks. Goalkeeper Isaac Amoako, who was playing his first competitive game after his 2015 knee surgery, actually saved the fourth kick, sending Kotoko to the Round of 32 stage.

Obed Owusu, Awal Mohammed and Isaac Quansah were the players who neatly converted Kotoko’s penalty kicks. The game was quite a difficulty one. The lower division side were determined to cause an upset but Kotoko, who have gone five matches without a win in the Premier League, remained the strong and dominating with their resolve to secure victory before the midweek league clash with Aduana Stars at home.

Thus the triumph over Bekwai Youth Academy not only ensures progress in the FA Cup. It as well serves as a morale booster for the fabulous lads and indeed for Coach Frimpong Manso, who sat on the bench with assistance from Godwin Ablordey.
