The Africa Football Federation (CAF) has a new President in Ahmad Ahmad who will serve for four years.
During the 39th General Assembly on-going in Addis Ababa at the African Union headquarters the Madagascar FA President beat incumbent Issa Hayatou by 34 votes to 20.
Hayatou, who had earlier in his speech asked African to decide for their continent, was crest fallen when the results where announced as Ahmad’s supporters celebrated.
President of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), Gianni Infantino who has been rumoured to support change in African football and wanted Ahmad to win refused to speak after the elections , but was all smiles.
Djibouti FA president, Suleiman Hassan Waberi, on the other hand, said he is happy with the change in African football.
“I am very happy that I pushed Ahmad Ahmad to stand against Issa Hayatou. This is good because there is change every where even in European football,” said Waberi.
Vincent Nzamwita, the Rwanda FA President, said he was happy that African football has now been liberated.
“This is the greatest time in African football because we the voters have showed that we need change," said Nzamwita.
"I am very glad that finally we the voters have advocated for change in African football. This is the happiest moment for me because now as a women I am sure African football for women will also develop faster," said the Sierra Leaone FA President Isha Johansen.
The Assembly also admitted Zanzibar as the 55th CAF member.
