Gattuso: AC Milan are scared of not doing the right things

After AC Milan threw away victory over Atalanta as Emiliano Rigoni bagged a last minute equaliser, Rossoneri coach Gennaro Gattuso was unhappy with how his team handled the final moments of the match.

Things were going well for the Rossoneri who took the lead after just two minutes, but Papu Gomez equalised early in the second half, before Giacomo Bonaventura put Milan back in front on the hour. However, Rigoni volleyed home in time added on to rescue a point for La Dea.

“Obviously there is a lot of regret at the moment after playing well in four Serie A matches,” Gattuso told the press.

“Today it was like two different games. In the first half we had fun playing, then in the second half we went to sleep in time added on and struggled to get the ball out of defence.

“We have a duty to believe we can qualify for the Champions League, we need to think about what isn’t working and why we have these ‘blackouts’.

“Maybe it is better to play worse and win, but we struggle because we play a style. When the ball is in these areas it hurts us. You can’t defend goals like this, they just take you by surprise.

“We aren’t giving the work we put in that continuity, and the goals we are conceding are confusing. On corners, we are having a lot of issues and, as well as balls between the lines.

“We are scared of not doing the right things and have to improve on that.”

Gattuso came under for taking Bonaventura off and replacing him with Bakayoko, though he defended his decision.

“I put Bakayoko on to give us more bite in the centre midfield,” Gattuso went on. “So I took Bonaventura off. Maybe I was wrong, but I thought it was the right thing to do in the second half.”
