Giggs: Why Burnley defender Keane left Man Utd...

Ryan Giggs has revealed why Michael Keane left Manchester United a couple of seasons ago.

Despite being widely hailed as a talented young player, Keane was allowed to leave United for Burnley back in 2014 and since departing Old Trafford; the centre back has managed to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Giggs was part of the coaching staff at United when Keane left and the club legend has stated that the recently capped England international was let go by Louis van Gaal due to the presence of established defenders such as Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind in the squad.

During Keane's England debut against Germany, Giggs told ITV Sport: "At the time we had [Chris] Smalling, we had [Phil] Jones.

"Louis [Van Gaal] had brought in Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, so he wasn't playing.

"Credit to him, like I say, he's gone away, knuckled down. He deserves his chance, because he's been consistently good in the Premier League."
