Board Member of Accra Hearts of Oak has lamented over the prize money given to winners of the Ghana Premier League, insisting it is a “peanut.”
According to the Ghana Football Association executive committee member, the monetary reward to winners of the league can’t defray the expenses involved in participating in African competition.
Aduana Stars were given $30,000 for winning the Ghana Premier League, an amount Frank Nwokolo Nelson has described as scanty and unable to match the cost involved in running club for continental Championships.
“The GHC 30,000 prize money for the GPL winner is small, It is peanut. The amount is nothing, for instance if Hearts of Oak travel in and out to North the flight is GHC 24,000 so in case we win the league and we are given such amount is no money but that is what the GFA have.”
Following the triumph by Aduana in the Ghana Premier League they will represent Ghana in next seasons CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, Frank Nelsom added he was hopeful in the future the monies given winners of the league will increase with the hope of helping clubs in African competitions.
“Maybe in future something must be done so that the money is increased in order to help the league champions.”
On the contrary Aduana’s Chief Executive Albert Commey was satisfied with the Prize money insisting they will go to Africa and excel in the Champions League.
“For me, I do not think the prize money is low because there are a lot of benefits associated with when a team wins the league,” he said. “The benefit that my outfit Aduana will get as league champions goes beyond the prize money. We should not narrow it to the prize money alone because my doors are open wider to the cooperate bodies demanding to associate with the club,” he added.
Accra Hearts of Oak finished third in the Ghana Premier League and lost he MTN FA Cup final to Kumasi Asante hence, they will not participate in any Continental competition.
