Keane targets set-piece advantage

Published on: 18 July 2018

Michael Keane believes set-pieces can become a key part of Everton's approach under Marco Silva.

The World Cup 2018 highlighted just how important goals from free-kicks, corners and penalties can prove, with 43% of strikes coming from dead balls.

Silva was appointed by the Toffees at the end of May and has made a point of schooling his squad on both attacking and defending set-pieces.

The work paid off in Saturday's club-record 22-0 triumph over ATV Irdning, with Keane grabbing his side's third with a powerful header.

After a tough first season at Goodison Park, the 25-year-old will be hoping for more during the 2018-19 campaign and his height could prove crucial at both ends.

Everton begin their Premier League season against newcomers Wolves and are 5/4 to win at Molineux, with the draw 23/10 and Wolves 5/4.

The former Burnley man acknowledges the importance of set-pieces and is confident his side's work on the training ground can pay off during the upcoming campaign.

"Going forward, I think it will be a big part [of our game]," Keane told the club's website. "One day out in Austria, we spent a lot of time working on them, for and against, and that has paid off in the game. We looked dangerous even when we weren't scoring from them.

"We have to now take that into the season. You saw at the World Cup how many goals were scored from set-plays. They decide a lot of games."

Everton can be backed at 6/1 to finish in the top six of the Premier League.
