Kenichi Yatsuhashi explains decision to name Yahaya Mohammed as the new captain

Aduana Stars head coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi has revealed the reasons why he appointed a new captain at the club.

The Japanese trainer named Yahaya Mohammed as the new captain after his first competitive game at the club since taking in charge of the two-time Ghanaian champions.

Black Stars B goalkeeper Joseph Addo lost his captaincy role to the experienced striker, who will be deputized by former Medeama defender Paul Aidoo.

However, Yatsuhashi, 49, says the decision was based on Yahama Mohammed's strong winning mentality in games and that will allow Joseph Addo to concentrate on his goalkeeping duties.

"The coach can't be on the pitch during match days and I need a captain who can set the example, especially a winning mentality so I observed the players during the first match and the training sessions to find who possessed the best winning mentality in out team and that was the captain I selected," he told reporters.

This decision is expected to cause friction in camp, with many of the players believed to be dissatisfied but he claims he explained the changes to the goalkeeper and his former deputy Elvis Opoku as well as the rest of the players.

"I told him personally my decision is to let him focus more on goalkeeping and he is doing that tremendously."

"Today, during training he was making excellent saves and excellent passes and excellent leadership at the back so his improvement was enhanced because of the changes in captaincy."

"Elvis is very very serious now, even though he cannot play the next match because of two yellow accumulation. He is working hard by pushing his teammates."

"Those two are taking it very well, not only them but every body's performance has been enhanced because of changes in the captaincy," he added.

Aduana Stars will lock horns with AS Vita in DR Congo on Sunday in the CAF Confederation cup.
