Kumasi Asante Kotoko have explained the reason for letting stalwart defender Awal Mohammed leave ahead of the expiration of his contract in February.

Awal Mohammed left the Porcupine Warriors on Monday to join Kuwaiti side Al Fahaheel on a two year deal.

According to a statement released on the website of the club, the player had negotiated with the Reds should an offer arrive he would leave by the permission of the top hierarchy of the club.

"Awal Mohammed negotiated, as part of his contract, to forfeit his signing on fee in return for Kotoko's will to consider permitting his exit at the end of the season in the event that he earns a move abroad."

"Having judged his service as praiseworthy, management permitted him join the new club as holding him bound to his February expiration date would have put his move in serious jeopardy."

"He joined us under a special circumstance and we found his situation special enough to come to an understanding when he needed to move on," he Communications Director of the Club, Obed Acheampong explained.

The club has duly notified the FA and wished Awal well in his future endeavours.

The defender was a key member of the team that won the President Cup and the FA Cup last season.
