Leipzig rule out Werner departure

Published on: 21 August 2018

RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick has dismissed suggestions that striker Timo Werner could be allowed to leave the club in the near future.

The 22-year-old forward is under contract with Leipzig until the summer of 2020, but continues to be linked with interest from a number of top clubs across the continent.

He has made it clear to us as well, as in many interviews, that he will definitely play for us in the coming year.

However, Rangnick believes that there is a long-term agreement in place already for both the player and the club, who have announced that Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann will arrive to take charge at the end of the current campaign.

Rangnick told Sky Germany of a possible sale in the coming days: "That's just not an issue for us. Timo has made it clear to us as well, as in many interviews, that he will definitely play for us in the coming year.

"Moreover, he has stated that he wants to play at least one season under Julian Nagelsmann.

"With only two years left on his current deal, Leipzig would, however, most likely not allow him to go into the 2019-20 season without committing his future to the club for longer than the summer of 2020.

"We will try to extend his contract ahead of that time."

Werner has scored 42 goals in 77 appearances in all competitions in his two seasons with Leipzig, having started his career with VfB Stuttgart.

RB Leipzig are 8/11 to finish in the top four in the Bundesliga this season, with Schalke priced at 1/1 and Hoffenheim 11/4.
