Lionel Messi Appears to Criticise Argentine FA After Delay En-Route to Copa America Final

Argentina superstar Lionel Messi appears to have been critical of his national association after the Albiceleste were delayed en-route to New Jersey where they will contest the final of the Copa America Centenario this weekend.

Messi and his team-mates were left grounded as they waited to travel to the next destination, seemingly leaving the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who is seeking his first major international honour, less than impressed.

Uploading a picture of himself on the plane with Sergio Aguero to Instagram, Messi said, "Once again on a plane waiting to leave for our destination. What a disaster those at the AFA are. By God!!!

A statement from the AFA themselves put the blame on adverse weather and pointed out that travel has been organised by tournament officials and not the national associations.

"The Argentine Football Association was informed that the flight carrying the team to New Jersey suffered a delay in departure time due to weather issues. Also, the AFA notes that all scheduled transfers are appointed by the organisers of the Copa America Centenario."

Argentina will face Chile at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday evening in a repeat of the final from just 12 months ago.

Chile were victorious on home soil in Santiago on that occasion, prevailing in a penalty shootout that saw Messi score before Gonzalo Higuain and Ever Banega both missed to hand the hosts their first ever international success.

Messi has an Olympic gold medal to his name from earlier in his career but is still missing senior silverware, despite everything he has achieved at club level for Barcelona. He has already been a losing finalist in two Copa America tournaments as well as at the 2014 World Cup.
