Luis Enrique Took a Soft Approach With Barcelona Players After Shock Alaves Defeat

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is believed to have taken a soft approach with his players after a shock La Liga defeat at the hands of Alaves over the weekend, choosing to remain positive and protect damaged confidence within the group rather than be critical.

According to Spanish publication Sport, Enrique made sure he didn't 'individualise' when the squad met up before training on Sunday - the morning after the night before, so to speak.

The 2015 treble winning coach was keen not to place blame on specific players or errors and refused to single out any scapegoats within the group. He is thought not to have used much in the way of tactical analysis to highlight problems and instead focused on calming his rattled squad.

It was a weakened Barça side that took to the field in the Basque north after the international break, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez only appearing from the bench later on. Gerard Pique also missed out, while summer signing Jasper Cillessen deputised in goal.

The reigning La Liga champions now have another day to ready themselves for Tuesday night's opening Champions League game against Scottish counterparts Celtic at Camp Nou.

However, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will not be ready to feature. That's despite reports he is recovering from a hamstring problem faster than initially expected. It means that Dutch international Cillessen will have another chance to prove himself.

Barcelona met Celtic at this stage of the competition as recently as 2013/14, the last time the Glasgow club made it into the group draw.

Cesc Fabregas scored the only goal of the game when the two faced each other at Parkhead, while Neymar scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 Barça rout back at Camp Nou - a game in which Pique, Pedro and Cristian Tello also found the net.
