Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admits they need Wayne Rooney to step up in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

United's extra-time win over Anderlecht to reach the Europa League semi-finals came at a cost following injuries to Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo.

Both suffered knee injuries that are expected to sideline them for the rest of the season while Chris Smalling, Juan Mata and Phil Jones are also crocked.

On Rooney, Mourinho said: "He has a good mentality and he is a fighter.

"He is a strong man, even if he is not in the best condition, even if he is not at the level of sharpness that you need to play high-level football.

"But he has the experience and character, so he has to. Now we need absolutely everyone."
