Martinez: Hazard should move on

Published on: 17 July 2018

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has suggested the time is right for Eden Hazard to move on from Chelsea and take a new challenge.

The former Everton boss feels the influential playmaker could fit into any team in the world, with Hazard having dropped repeated hints this summer that his preferred next destination is Real Madrid.

Hazard scored three goals for his country at the World Cup in Russia - including the second in the 2-0 win over England in the third place play-off on Saturday – helping Belgium to achieve their best-ever World Cup finish.

Players need new challenges and new projects.

Martinez believes he has the quality to succeed anywhere in world football and suggests this might be the right time to leave Chelsea.

Martinez believes he has the quality to play for the very best teams in world football.

"It could be the best time [for Hazard] to try something different," Martinez told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"He is a player who has maturity and a lot of leadership. His play is based on talent."

After the win over England, Hazard told the Belgian press it 'might be time to discover something different' following six years at Chelsea.

Martinez is backing the player for a move.

"Hazard could carry a new project anywhere in the world. He is at the best moment of his career. He could fit in any team in the world," he added.

"Players need new challenges and new projects. Perhaps it's a good time for [Chelsea] and for Eden [to split].

"I would be very surprised if Chelsea didn't have big offers for him right now."

Chelsea are 14/1 to win the Premier League next season and 4/6 to finish in the top four.
