Medeama made history in becoming the first Ghanaian club to reach the group stage of any CAF competition since Berekum Chelsea last did four years ago in the CAF Champions League.

Medeama beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 to secure a 3-3 aggregate scoreline and progress via the away goal rule to reach the “money zone” of Africa’s second tier league competition.

Medeama Soccer Club was established in 2008 as a third division club. The club failed in its initial attempt to qualify to the Ghana Premier League in 2010, leading to the purchase of now defunct Kessben FC the same year.

The licence of Medeama Sporting Club was completed in December 2010 and has since been a constant feature in the Ghanaian top-flight.

In their six years of existence in the Ghana Premier League, Medeama has failed to win the ultimate league title but has won the FA Cup twice in 2013 and 2015 plus the Ghana Super Cup in 2015.

As FA Cup Champions, Medeama got the ticket to represent Ghana in Africa for the CAF Confederations Cup where they saw off Al Ahly Tipoli from Libya and Sudanese side Ahly Shendi before going past Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday to book their group stage slot.

For the past four years, no Ghanaian team has been able to make it into the group stages of any Caf league competition (Caf Champions League and Caf Confederations Cup) after Berekum Chelsea made history in 2012.

Medeama will know their group opponents on May 24 when the draw is conducted at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt with the hope of going past Berekum Chelsea’s feat.
