Meyer opts for Schalke exit

Published on: 18 June 2018

Schalke have confirmed that they are facing the exit of a second star player this summer after midfielder Max Meyer turned down the offer of a new contract.

Leon Goretzka has already announced that he will leave Gelsenkirchen to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season and he will be followed through the exit doors by fellow Germany international Meyer.

Club sporting director Christian Heidel confirmed: "Max will definitely leave Schalke in the summer. We are dealing with this situation professionally.

"There were - and there won't be - any bad words from both sides; it's all been very amicable.

"The player is planning his future, we are currently planning Schalke's future, and our plans head in different ways."

Meyer, now 22, has spent the whole of his professional career to date with Schalke and made his senior debut for Germany as far back as May 2014, when he started against Poland in a pre-World Cup friendly.

He was also a member of the Germany squad who reached the final of the Olympic Games in 2016, where they were beaten on penalties by hosts Brazil.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig will finish the season shorn of the services of Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg after he picked up a three-game ban for elbowing Florian Grillitsch during a 5-2 defeat to Hoffenheim last weekend.

Leipzig are currently 33/1 to finish in the top four in the Bundesliga this season, with Hoffenheim priced at 10/11 and Bayer Leverkusen 4/5.
