MTN To Withdraw Kotoko Sponsorship

Telecommunication giants MTN have threatened to withdraw their sponsorship of Kumasi Asante Kotoko following their participation in the Unity Match sponsored by their fierce competitor, Vodafone.

The defending Premier League champions featured in the inaugural Unity Match organized by Primeval Media to promote peace ahead of the 2016 General Elections.

The event which had several football legends such as Edgar Davids, Sol Campbell, Dwight Yorke and William Gallas all in attendance was sponsored by Vodafone.

As part of the deal that saw Kotoko feature in the Kumasi leg of the Unity Cup, the club were prevented from donning their traditional jersey with MTN embossed on the front of the jersey since it constituted ambush marketing.

Kotoko in return were paid an undisclosed amount in appearance fees.

But MTN are not happy with the development as it is in direct violation of a clause in the contract signed between the two entities.

Kotoko, per the contract, are required to wear MTN embossed jerseys in all engagements as part of a strategy to give maximum mileage to the telecom giants.

Top management members of MTN have resolved to take the issue up against Kotoko with the option of withdrawing their sponsorship.

The leading communication network in Ghana pay Asante Kotoko a reported GHS 50,000 on a monthly basis, a package which club insiders say is used to offset the huge wage bill of the club.
