Former Black stars player Nii Odartey Lamptey insists the national under 17 team that are playing in Gabon now reminds him of their squad in 1991.

Odartey Lamptey was part of the famous starlets 91 squad that won the world cup in Italy.

The team was exciting and a delight to watch in their all-conquering feat in 1991.

The striker went on to play for big European clubs and established his name in Ghanaian football history. In an interview with a cape coast based radio station he said he saw lots of similarities in the current squad with that of 91.

“I think I can see some similarities in this squad with that of 1991. Especially in the way they were camped, they have been camped for a very long time. I was part of the management committee before I was promoted to under-20 last year. We did a lot of work and search so I’m not surprised with their performance,” he told Asafo 99.1 fm

“The same happen to us when we went for the world cup in 1989 and we failed to win. The official were patient with us and we won in 1991,”

Ghana are through to the semifinals of the Africa Junior Championship and Odartey Lamptey believes the boys can win it.

“I think with good preparations, there is no way the team cannot make and this is what I see in those boys.”

The Black Starlets will play Guinea tomorrow in the final group game.
