PSV Eindhoven chief Marcel Brands isn't surprised Memphis Depay struggled at Manchester United.
Depay is now thriving at Lyon after moving to France in January.
"I have no idea if the confidence of Memphis was lost, although when he was at Manchester United, it did not come to the surface," Brands told Voetbal International.
"Of course he has had a difficult period, but when you see what he'd already done for the Dutch national team at the highest level, you know enough.
"Memphis needed that intermediate step, like (Gini) Wijnaldum."
