Sane urged to "move forward"

Published on: 21 July 2018

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said that Leroy Sane will recover from missing the World Cup 2018 and come back stronger.

Last season's PFA Young Player of the Year was a surprise omission from Joachim Low's 23-man squad for the tournament, though Germany disappointed in Russia, going out in the group stages.

He has to improve his game, try to keep the levels he showed last season.

Guardiola says, while missing out was a setback for Sane, at the age of just 22, he has plenty of international football to look forward to in the future.

Sane played a few minutes for City in their latest pre-season game, a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the USA and after the game Guardiola says that Sane now has to move on.

He said: "He's so young and in two years it is another European Championships and then in four years another World Cup.

"Leroy has to accept it and move forward. He has the chance to show the national team from Germany and first of all us, he has another season to show his quality.

"He has to improve his game, try to keep the levels he showed last season. We are so happy to have him here."

Riyad Mahrez made his debut for City in the defeat to Dortmund following his move from Leicester City but, without those who played in the World Cup 2018, it was a largely young City side who took to the field in Chicago.

City go on to play Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the United States before travelling back to the UK where, as Premier League champions, they play FA Cup winners Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Then, a week later, on 12th August they get their league campaign underway with a trip to Arsenal. They are 1/1 to start off with a win while the Gunners are 5/2 with the draw 13/5.

Their first home game is a week later with Huddersfield Town the visitors to the Etihad Stadium.

City are 4/6 to win the Premier League title again next season while they are 1/16 to finish in the top four.
