The former Black Starlets manager is doing a fantastic job at the moment with the Porcupine Warriors and if the Kotoko management were to decide on his future right now they could come against fans pressure not to sack a winning coach.
Fabin signed a one-year deal when he took over from Steven Polack in February this year but that contract expires in five months’ time and it is still his old contract that is currently running.
Going through Fabin’s competitive record of the league’s first round the only big result he had, mainly against the big clubs, was a 2-1 home against Aduana Stars but was subjugated by Hearts of Oak on April 29 at the Babayara and on the road his team lost to Medeama, Ashantigold and also to Dreams FC and Karela United.
However, he’s changed his team from an inconsistent one into a side capable of killing off big games but it doesn’t appear CEO George Amoako and his team are convinced. At the moment Fabin’s future seems not part of the management’s priority.
A new contract would definitely signify the support of the management for the coach. It is simple logic that if they are impressed by his work, they will try to keep him for few more years and if they actually are, what is keeping them from not offering him a new deal?
His tactics have worked against the likes of Simba SC away, Hearts of Oak and Ashantigold in high profile friendlies. It was 1-1 against Simba, 4-0 against the Phobians in two legs and a 3-2 victory over The Miners and he’s pulled off these games with some plucky performances of his charges.
When Kotoko were battered 3-1 by Karela – it was Fabin. When Hearts of Oak came to Kumasi to cause mayhem – it was Fabin. When the team struggled to play good football Fabin was the one pushed forward to take the most bullets.
And so after Kotoko humbling the Phobians back to back in the Super Clash and adding Ashgold just last Sunday onto their list of defeated friendly opponents, why is it not Fabin?
This transformation has come after bold decisions to offload figures like Sadick Adams, Eric Donkor, Tuffour Frimpong, Seth Opare, Baba Mahama and loaned out Yakubu Mohammed towards the end of the season’s first round that generated lot of controversies but now the team is playing better but the bigger challenge will be to continue on the same path when competitive football resumes.
To rip apart a team that has defeated Hearts of Oak 3-1 to win the FA Cup and rebuild is certainly a tough technical job to do.
New recruits Agyeman Badu, Richard Senanu, Songne Yacouba, Wahab Adams have been integrated into the team and it is working well so far.
Fabin’s 4-4-2 has provided eight goals in the games against Simba, Hearts of Oak and Ashgold – a return he never achieved at the beginning of the season.
While not comparing competitive results and performance to that of friendly games where the stakes and pressure are lesser, Fabin’s fantastic job should be pointed out but Kotoko management still remains unconvinced despite a transformation and a lack of new deal for the coach backs that point.
