Stefano Sturaro's Agent Confirms Sunderland Tried to Sign the Midfielder This Summer

Published on: 06 September 2016

This past transfer window was a big one for Sunderland. Apart from hiring a new boss in former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes, the Black Cats brought in several new players.

Moyes intends to improve the football at the Stadium of Light this season, and has signed a number of his targets with the aim of avoiding the relegation battle.

The Scot did quite well in the market, but missed out on what would have been a huge summer signing. Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro was a reported target during the summer, and the player's agent Carlo Volpihas confirmed the Black Cats' interest, as well as Southampton's.

Yes, Southampton and Sunderland were interested in Sturaro, he said to Italian website, Tutto Juve.

The latter's manager, David Moyes, is an admirer since his time at Everton but the discussion has stopped in June because there was no basis to enter into negotiations. Nothing has ever been taken into account by Juventus.

Sunderland settled forDidier Ndong, whom they paid £13.6m to sign from Lorient on transfer deadline day. Among other players who came in are Papy Djilobodji, Andan Januzaj, Paddy McNair, Donald Love andVictor Anichebe.

Ndong will have a huge burden on his shoulders this season, as he is expected to be the main man in the middle for Sunderland. The 22-year-old will likely be used as a defensive midfielder, but can offer a lot going forward.

The Black Cats have just one point from their three games this season, and sit at 16th. Moyes will hope that his new signings can play well enough to pull the team higher up the table as the season continues.
