John Stones was left to bemoan Manchester City's defeat to AS Monaco tonight.
Pep Guardiola's City were beaten 3-1 by the French club at the Stade Louis II to exit the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate.
The visitors conceded twice in the first half, which cancelled out their two-goal pre-game lead, before a much-improved showing in the second half was not capitalised on by missing a number of golden opportunities.
Asked what went wrong, Stones told BT Sport: "I think very sloppy, not up to our standard in the first half, we wanted to correct that.
"We weren't clinical enough in both boxes. We didn't create enough chances and we weren't defensively solid enough.
"The second half didn't reflect the full scoreline. We were the City everyone knows, no matter what the outcome of the game was.
"We should have scored more goals. You can always say that after the game.
"After the first game it was how we came back and came ahead, but we are thoroughly disappointed, we all know we should have done better and believed we deserved to be in the next round."
City conceded a headed goal to Tiemoue Bakayoko from a free-kick in the 77th minute which was ultimately their undoing and Stones admitted it simply wasn't good enough.
"The gaffer was saying before the game the more and more you play in the Champions League, it's more about the set pieces," he added.
"You see Real Madrid the other week scoring from two set pieces and going through (at Napoli).
"We weren't solid enough in those areas and that's what let us down on the day."
