Sulley Muntari's Deportivo La Coruna debut ends in draw with Espanyol

Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari made his Spanish La Liga debut with Deportivo La Coruna, in the club's 0-0 draw with Espanyol.

The former A C Milan midfielder came on in the 82nd minute, when he replaced Pedro Mosquera in very entertaining encounter.

The 33 year old signed for the La Liga side on Thursday, and was immediately named in the match day team by manager Clarence Seedorf, who had earlier said the Ghanaian will need time to settle.

“He [Muntari] will need time to get to his best form,” Seedorf said in a prematch conference.

The Dutch manager threw in his former teammate at AC Milan as the club were in search of a goal to win the encounter.

Muntari gave a fair account of himself, and did not look like a player who has not played competitively since last summer.

Striker Lucas Perez missed a second-half penalty as Espanyol rode their luck to earn a goalless draw at the Riazor and deny the hosts a first win since mid-December.

Perez's strike partner Florin Andone wasted a similarly gilt-edged chance in the 77th minute when he powered a close-range header against the crossbar, while Depor also hit the woodwork through Fede Cartabia in the first half.

Deportivo deserved more but the result means they have now taken just three points from their last 10 games, and they remain stuck in the relegation zone.

The draw is manager Clarence Seedorf's first point, and lifts the club above Las Palmas on the La Liga table to 18th.
