Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey won his first piece of European silverware with Athletico Madrid after the Spanish side swept aside Marseille in the final of the Europa Cup.

The "Rojiblancos" beat the French club 3-0 in Lyon to win their third Europa Cup in 9 years.

Thomas Partey came on in the 88th minute to replace Angel Correa, and was emaculate in the final few minutes as the Spanish giants emerged triuphant on the night in France.

French forward Antoine Griezmann scored twice, with his first coming in the 21st minute after finishing off an Andre Zambo poor touch.

The petit striker scored his second with a spectacular dink in the 49th minute leaving Marseille with an arduos task.

Athletico Madrid Captain Gabi drilled in the third goal late on as Atletico again lifted the trophy they also won in 2010 and 2012.

However, the outcome could have been different had Marseille forward Valere Germain taken an early chance, before Griezmann's lethal finishing allowed Atletico to take control.

Meanwhile, Marseille skipper Dimitri Payet, an injury doubt before the game, lasted just half an hour before hobbling off in tears.

Thomas Partey has had an amazing season and can now show off with a piece of silverware. The 24 year old Ghana has played 50 games this season and scored five goals in the process.
