Tolisso facing months out of action

Published on: 16 September 2018

Bayern Munich have confirmed that French midfielder Corentin Tolisso is facing several months out of action due to a serious injury to his right knee.

The 24-year-old World Cup 2018 winner opened the scoring in a 3-1 Bundesliga win at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, but had to be replaced shortly before half-time after taking a knock in a challenge with Kevin Volland.

And subsequent tests have shown that the injury is as serious as Bayern had feared it might be.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Corentin Tolisso sustained a serious injury in Bayern's home Bundesliga encounter with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, the Munich club's medical unit ascertained following an examination after the game.

"The French World Cup winner ruptured a cruciate ligament and the medial meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery on Sunday.

"The midfielder will be sidelined for several months."

Wing-back Rafinha is also facing time on the sidelines after he sustained ankle ligament damage when he was fouled by Karim Bellarabi, but he is expected back in a matter of weeks rather than months.

The Bayern statement added: "Rafinha will also be out of action for several weeks. He has suffered a partial tear of the ligaments in his left ankle."

Bayern are back in action on Wednesday evening when they head to Portugal to take on Benfica in the Champions League.

Die Roten are 10/1 to win the Champions League this season, with holders Real Madrid 8/1 and Barcelona 6/1.
