"Valencia CF has this Wednesday reach a total agreement with Marcelino Garcia Toral for the one-year extension until June 30, 2020 of his contract as first team manager," a club statement read.

Former Spain Under-21 international Marcelino started his coaching career in 1997 with Lealtad at the age of 32. In 2003, he took the top job at Sporting Gijon, before winning the Spanish second tier with Recreativo three years later.

His stock began to grow and, in 2011 he was named manager of Sevilla, where he spent a season. It was in his next role, at Villarreal, that he truly showed his managerial nous.

Marcelino took over at El Madrigal in January 2013 with the club in the Segunda Division and guided them to promotion back to La Liga. He transformed the club and, in 2015-16, they reached the Europa League semifinals and qualified for the Champions League play-offs with a fourth-place finish.
