VIDEO: Tonight Might Spell the End for Gigi Buffon as Italy's Numero Uno

When Spain took the lead against Italy during Thursday night's World Cup qualifier, all the talk should have been about Sevilla midfielderVitolo; scoring on your debut for your country is a truly wonderful thing...

...Alas, Vitolo'sgoal might end being far more memorable for an altogether different reason.

Seemingly reaching Sergio Busquet's intendedthrough-ball before the sprinting Vitolo,Italy's captain andlegendarygoalkeeper Gigi Buffon had what can only be described as a sheer rush of blood to the head- missing the ball entirely, he had to watch on helplessly as the Sevilla man gladlypassed it into an empty net.

Any calls for the 38-year-old to hang up his gloves - at least for his country - might be a tad premature, but still; such a costly error will only increase the likelihood that a new face could soon replace what was once thought irreplaceable.

Certainly AC Milan fans will want Buffon's namesakeGianluigi Donnarummato take on the coveted No.1 jersey, but don't put it passed the Juventus stopper to come back fighting. You don't give in easy when you've amassed a staggering 163 caps for your country.

The game ended 1-1, with Roma's Daniele De Rossi equalising from the penalty spot following a clumsy foul by serial offender Sergio Ramos.
