Wilshere deserves England call-up - Wenger

Published on: 14 March 2018

LONDON -- Arsene Wenger is convinced Jack Wilshere has done enough to be back in the England squad but admitted there has been no progress in contract talks with the midfielder.

Wilshere has yet to be called up by Gareth Southgate since he became England manager, but could be included in Thursday's squad after getting regular playing time in recent months.

Asked if he thinks Wilshere is likely to get called up, Wenger said: "Yes and I wish he is in the England squad. The vibes I get are positive. I believe he has a good chance to be in there, but we have to leave that to Gareth Southgate. I have enough to do with my job."

Wilshere hasn't featured for England since Euro 2016 following a spate of problems with injuries. Southgate said earlier this season he would not pick Wilshere unless he plays regularly in the Premier League, which the midfielder has done since December.

Wilshere's Arsenal future is still up in the air as well as his contract expires this summer and he is yet to agree a new deal.

"On my side, nothing has changed," Wenger told a news conference when asked about the negotiations.

"I don't know [if he'll stay], but Jack will be free at the end of the season. We [have made] a proposal to him, I want him to stay and my desire is to see him linked to the club for the future. I hope he will do it."
