Witsel happy with BVB move

Belgium international midfield anchor Axel Witsel believes he is ready to make a big impact by heading back to Europe to join Borussia Dortmund.

The 29-year-old has spent the last 18 months playing in China with Tianjin Quanjian, but has opted to return to his home continent, where he had already enjoyed spells with Standard Liege, Benfica and Zenit St Petersburg.

After the World Cup it was important for me to come back to Europe.

And, having agreed a four-year contract with BVB, Witsel told the club's official website: "Dortmund are one of the best teams in Europe.

"I think that when you start as a professional, it's always your dream to play in the top leagues, at top clubs, and now I am.

"I'm 29, but for me it's the best age, because I have more experience. I'm ready to help achieve the club's objectives and give my best for the team.

"After the World Cup it was important for me to come back to Europe. I spoke with coach Lucien Favre and sporting director Michael Zorc and they showed me support and love, which was really important."

Witsel was a key member of the Belgium squad who reached the semi-finals of World Cup 2018 and he has won 96 international caps to date.

At club level he has won two Belgian league titles with Standard and a Russian Premier League crown with Zenit.

Meanwhile, Dortmund can be backed at 1/6 to finish in the top four in the Bundesliga this season, with RB Leipzig 1/1 and Schalke 11/8.
