Zinedine Zidane Shows No Fear in Axing Real Madrid Stars From Champions League Squad

Published on: 12 September 2016

Zinedine Zidane may only have taken charge of Real Madrid in January, but he has already made waves with the Spanish giants.

The Madrid legend led Los Blancos to their 11th Champions League triumph back in May, and recently called FIFA's decision to hand the Spanish giants a one-year transfer ban "absurd".

Now Zidane has taken his ruthless streak to the next level after he cut notable Madrid stars from his squad for the 2016/17 Champions League campaign.

Ahead of beginning their title defenceMadrid's official twitter account announced the 19-man shortlist of first-team players who would feature under the Frenchman ahead of Wednesday evening's clash with Sporting Lisbon.

Most notable by their absence were fan favourites Marco Asensio, as well as former Malaga starlet Isco and goalkeeper Keylor Navas, though the latter is sidelined with an Achilles problem.

Isco's future at the Bernabeu has been up in the air for some time, but the midfielder rebuffed rumours of a move away during the summer transfer window and vowed to fight for his place.

Asensio, meanwhile, returned to Madrid after a season-long deal at Espanyol, but has failed to work his way into the reckoning under Zidane since his return.

And Madrid fans took to twitter to express their surprise at Zidane's decision not to include the duo in his squad:

@realmadriden @SportingCP_en no Asensio??? #Strange

@realmadriden Glad that Morata is in but Isco ought to be in.

@realmadriden @SportingCP_en asensio?????

Zidane certainly isn't afraid of putting the cat amongst the pigeons, is he...
