$100k Black Stars World Cup appearance fee can set up VAR in 3 GPL venues - Kotoko PRO

The brands and communications manager of Asante Kotoko, David Obeng Nyarko, has claimed the $100,000 World Cup appearance fee one Black Stars player receives can set up VAR at three Ghana Premier League venues.

He believes this will bring down the incidents of poor officiating that has bedeviled the league over the years.

For a start, Obeng Nyarko wants the technology to be used in games involving Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko before later extending it to other match centres.

“I don’t understand why up till now we have not been able to implement the VAR in our league, at least for Hearts and Kotoko, we should try it.

“A player at the Blackstars made $100,000 at the World Cup, it can set up a VAR in three venues of our league at least for a start,” David Obeng Nyarko told Oyerepa FM.

The referees manager of the Ghana Football Association Alex Kotey said in 2022 that the VAR will be introduced in Ghana this year.

“For me, I’m saying that, give and take, by 2023 we should see VAR in Ghana,” Alex Kotey said in an interview with Joy Sports.

In 2021, the GFA announced that FIFA had approved the Project Team for the implantation of the Video Assistant Referee in Ghana, but not much has been heard about it since.
