2006 WC: We were inexperienced and naïve against Brazil - John Paintsil

Former Ghana defender, John Paintsil believes the Black Stars team were naïve and experienced against Brazil during the 2006 World Cup hosted in Germany.

The West African country made a huge impression in their first appearance for the Mundial.

Ghana set up a round of 16 game against the Brazilian after beating the USA and the Czech Republic to qualify for the next.

However, Brazil walloped the Black Stars 3-0 with Ronaldo, Adriano and Ze Roberto all scoring for the South American side.

But according to the former West Ham and Fulham right back, the team sat flat in defense and were naïve against the Brazilians.

“Against Brazil, we were naïve and inexperience and I will not blame the team because that was our first time,” Paintsil said in an interview with MAX TV.

“We sat flat and defense and the Brazilians were sharp in attack. They were more experienced than us and they had the best players in the team at the time, but I think we also did well from the group stage.

He continued, “Beating USA and the Czech Republic to qualify for the round of 16 was not an easy task. I was very happy but getting beat by Brazil was very frustrating, and as I said, I will not blame myself and my teammates.

“We had the experience in 2010, we had players from about 4 groups in the tournament and I was impressed with how we performed in 2010,” he added.

Ghana, however, bettered its performance during the 2010 Mundial in South Africa and played in the quarter-finals for the first time but were unimpressive during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil exiting at the group phase.

The team failed to book a qualification for the 2018 in Russia but CK Akonnor, who is the current head coach of the Black Stars has been tasked to qualify the team for the 2022 Mundial in Qatar.
