2019 AFCON: Joseph Aidoo to earn first Black Stars call-up ahead Kenya clash

Published on: 06 March 2019

Genk defender Joseph Aidoo is set to earn his first call-up to the Black Stars for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya on March 23.

Footballghana.com understands Aidoo will be handed his maiden call-up by coach Kwesi Appiah after an impressive season with the Belgium side.

The 23-year-old failed to honour a late Ghana call-up to face Iceland in the international friendly due to a hamstring injury in the final Belgian Jupiler League Championship Playoffs match.

The centre back was invited as a backup option for Rashid Sumaila who picked up a knock in the Japan clash.

The former Inter Allies defender has made 27 appearances and scored once for Genk so far this season.

Last season, he won four Man of the Match awards with a memorable one coming against Anderlecht where he scored the only goal of the match.

He featured in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup for Ghana. He played all four of his side's fixtures, with Ghana eventually getting eliminated by Mali in the quarterfinals.

He was also called up to the African U-20 Championship earlier the same year, where Ghana finished in third place.
