2022 FIFA WCQ: Ethiopia 1-1 Ghana - Black Stars suffer qualification setback after disappointing draw

Published on: 11 November 2021

Ghana on Thursday afternoon suffered a major 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification setback when the Black Stars drew 1-1 against Ethiopia.

The group G opponents today locked horns at the Orlando Stadium in South Africa to battle for the maximum three points.

Although Ethiopia needed not win the game for any reason, Ghana had all to play for to enhance chances of qualification to next year’s World Cup.

In a game where the Black Stars started very well, the opponent stood strong and kept the visiting team at bay.

With constant pressure on Ethiopia, Ghana finally broke the deadlock late in the first half when Andre Ayew scored from a direct free kick to shoot his team into the lead.

Elated and in control of the game, the Black Stars only needed to defend the lead in the second half but failed that test.

Following the hard work of the home team, they scored in the 72nd minute to force the match to end in a 1-1 stalemate.

Courtesy of the draw, Ghana now needs to beat South Africa by a two-goal margin on Sunday to have any chance of progressing to the final stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
