2022 World Cup qualifiers: What Bafana Bafana need against Ghana

Published on: 12 November 2021

Bafana Bafana will need to avoid defeat against Ghana to seal qualification to the playoffs of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

On Thursday, South Africa beat 1-0 Zimbabwe 1-0 to put more pressure on Ghana, who are the only side in Group G that is mathematically still in contention for the final and third round of the African qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana are 1st in Group G with 13 points, three points above Black Stars, who drew 1-1 with Ethiopia on Thursday.

Bafana will head into the final group clash against the Black Stars at Cape Coast on Sunday, with coach Hugo Broos’s side needing just a point to advance to the third round.

Ghana on the other hand, can still go through with a 1-0 win over South Africa as this will equal the goal difference, as both teams have scored six goals.

Prior to Thursday’s penultimate round of matches, Zimbabwe were the only side that Bafana had not beaten in the group.

The two sides yielded a goalless stalemate in Harare when the qualifiers resumed in September.

Bafana beat Ghana, with other wins coming from South Africa’s back-to-back games against Ethiopia last month.
