2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Black Stars played against a well-organized Angola team – Chris Hughton

Ghana coach Chris Hughton believes the Angola national team gave his outfit a tough opposition in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars opened its 2023 account with a win against Angola in match day four at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday.

It was the first win for the Black Stars since the 2022 World Cup defeat to Uruguay in December 2022.

Antoine Semenyo's last-gasp winner ensured the Black Stars returned to winning ways under new coach Chris Hughton.

Speaking after the game, the former Brighton manager said Angola was a well-organized side and has therefore heaped praise on the team despite suffering defeat.

“I think we have enough opportunities in the opposition box but of course if we don’t score the goals it put pressure on ourselves”

“We played against a good and well organized Angola team but credit to the team and the players for showing a great spirit and determination, it’s a win and that is the most important thing” he said after the game.

The Black Stars of Ghana are edging close to qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The four-time African champions has now opened a three-point lead on second place Central African Republic.

The Black Stars will travel to Luanda on Monday for the second leg of the double-header, knowing a win will seal early qualification.
