2023 AFCON Qualifiers: Blow for Angola as trio ruled out of Ghana clash

Angola has suffered an injury setback ahead of their 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Ghana this week.

The four-time African champions face Palancas Negras on Thursday at the Baba Yara Stadium in a match many expect to be difficult as both sides seek to maintain their unbeaten start to the qualifiers.

Angola will have to negotiate for points without influential trio of Núrio Fortuna, Nelson Luz and Zito Luvumbo due to injuries.

The trio will not be available for coach for Angola, however, coach Pedro Goncalves has handed late call ups to Geraldo Costa and Tó Carneiro as replacement for the injured players.

This means Pedro Goncalves will have to work with 24 players instead of the initial 26 players summoned for the Ghana game after refusing to replace one injured player.

Angola are currently camping in Algeria and will fly directly to Kumasi on Tuesday ahead of the match on Thursday.

The Black Stars are unbeaten in Kumasi for the past two decades and are heavy favourites to defeat Angola before travelling to Luanda for the second match.

Ghana leads the qualifying group after a draw and a win in their first two games, but Angola is close behind, and two wins will give the Black Stars a solid chance to qualify.
