Ashanti Gold striker Shafiu Mumuni set a new record for the WAFU Cup of Nations tournament with his hat-trick on Tuesday evening that helped Ghana to beat Cote d’Ivoire 3-1 in the semi-finals of this year’s edition.
The tournament which is played by national teams from West Africa made up of home-based players was first held in 2010 in Nigeria.
Though the current edition going on in Senegal is the 5th, this is the first time a player has managed to bag 3 goals in a single match.
Shafiu who is now the record holder started in Ghana’s game against the Ivorians and showed why he is regarded as one of the best strikers on the local scene.
He scored his first goal in the first half against the Elephants with luck playing a big role.
Two additional headed goals in the first five minutes of the second half were sensational and completed his hat-trick that has propelled the Black Stars to the finals of the 2019 WAFU Cup.
Shafiu additional has 4 goals in the ongoing tournament and is a strong contender for the golden shoot accolade.
