AC Milan succumb to late Atalanta comeback

Emiliano Rigoni broke the hearts of the AC Milan fans as his late goal gave Atalanta a 2-2 draw against the Rossoneri.

Just over 51,000 spectators crammed into the Stadio San Siro, and many would have barely been in their seats when Gonzalo Higuain rifled in the opener two minutes in.

Milan dominated, but plucky Atalanta got themselves level thanks to a beautiful flowing move which was finished off by Papu Gomez. Not that parity lasted long, Bonaventura then bagged an almost identical goal as Milan retook the lead. But, in time added on a late collapse saw Milan concede to a Rigoni strike.

Suso got free on the right and whipped in a ball to Higuain in the penalty box, and he brilliantly finished past Pierluigi Gollini to give Milan the perfect start.

Higuain found himself in again but a great tackle from Rafael Toloi thwarted the Argentine, before Bonaventura had an effort tipped over the bar by Gollini. It looked as though Bonaventura had doubled Milan’s lead, heading in a Calabria cross, but it was ruled out by VAR for offside. But he did have another chance, this time he could only hit the post.

As the first half drew to a close, Franck Kessie was excellently played in on goal by Higuain, but the Ivorian could only lift the ball over Gollini and wide of goal.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, a lovely flowing move from Atalanta saw Musa Barrow cross for Papu Gomez, who got in front of Davide Calabria to poke home at the near post. The lead barely lasted seven minutes as Suso accelerated down the right side and fizzed in a low cross for Bonaventura who slid in at the near post.

In the final moments a lapse of concentration from Gianluigi Donnarumma saw him flap at a cross, then after some pinball in the box, the ball fell to Marten De Roon 18 yards out, but Ricardo Rodriguez cleared off the line.

Not that it mattered as Atalanta got their goal, as Emiliano Rigoni fired in from close range to tie the game up.
