AFCON BUDGET: Sports Ministry spends an incredible $4.6m on Ghana’s disappointing outing in Egypt

Ghana’s disappointing and embarrassing outing at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt is costing the helpless tax payer a whopping $4.6m, more than what was spent on the team during the last campaign in Gabon in 2017.

The Black Stars have not only caused emotional pains to Ghanaians following their embarrassing show in Egypt but have also drained the national coffers from the little tax payers’ money.

The budget which raised endless issues ahead of the tournament has finally been laid bare leaving Ghanaians with nothing but disappointment in leadership.

In a delivery by the Sports Miniser Hon. Isaac Asiamah, on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Ghana spent a total of $4,564,352, approximately $4.6m.

Of this amount, an approximate figure of $1.2m was spent on accommodation alone.

Winning bonus for the players, technical team and additional technical staff was $1,489,432 with the additional technical team requested by Coach Kwasi Appiah costing the state $177,000.

The total figure of $4.6m spent on the team which failed to progress to the semi finals of the competition is in excess of $400,000 compared to the $4.2m spent in 2017.

With this figure, Ghana could have spent over $8m if the Black Stars had progressed to the semi finals of the tournament.

With Ghana’s ailing economy and the government spending lavishly on the national team, the plight of the average Ghanaian appears not so important to the state.
